The widow of a disgraced Illinois police officer, who authorities say staged his September 2015 suicide to look like he was gunned down, has been charged with conspiring to help her husband embezzle money from the Fox Lake Police Department’s youth auxiliary program. Melodie Gliniewicz was initially charged in January with six felony counts of money laundering and disbursing charitable funds for personal use. Gliniewicz pleaded not guilty to those charges, but officials said the new charge is an alternate way of charging her with the same offense. Gliniewicz is due in court for an arraignment on April 6. Authorities say her husband, Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, staged his suicide to make it look like a homicide out of fears that his wrongdoing would be discovered.
