White House to Go Solar

President Obama will install solar panels on the White House’s living quarters in spring 2011. He’s not the first president to paint the White House green: Jimmy Carter installed a solar water heater, and George W. Bush installed solar systems in the maintenance buildings, parts of the mansion, and the heated pool. Nor is he the only person in government with this idea: The New York Times says that military leaders are looking at renewable resources to decrease its dependence on fossil fuel—and therefore protect soldiers from carrying fuel in supply lines that are vulnerable to attack.
