Wadi Gaitan, Hispanic Florida GOP Spox, Quits over Trump

The Florida Republican Party’s spokesman Wadi Gaitan is the latest GOP official to quit over the party’s nomination of Donald Trump. After two years of attempting to utilize his Hispanic background to sell the GOP’s message to Spanish-language voters, Gaitan is leaving his job with the party to work at a think tank. “I’m thankful for my almost two years with the Florida GOP, however, moving on gives me a great, new opportunity to continue promoting free market solutions while avoiding efforts that support Donald Trump,” Gaitan said Monday in a statement to BuzzFeed News. Trump has repeatedly made incendiary public statements aimed at Hispanics—from calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” to repeatedly insisting an American-born federal judge could not adequately preside over a case because of his Mexican heritage.
