Violent Clashes in Egypt Protests

Groups of men wielding knives and sticks attacked thousands of protesters on Saturday in Cairo as demonstrations descended into violent clashes. Security forces also blocked the pro-reform groups and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and break up the violence. The ruling military council accused protesters of trying to drive a wedge between the army and the people, but the nation's military leader, Field Marshall Tantawi, tried to defuse the situation by praising the youths who led the uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak.
