U.S. Military Death Toll Hits 1,000

A tragic reminder the day before Memorial Day: the 1,000th American GI has been killed in the Afghan war. Marine Cpl. Jacob Leicht was killed by a bomb blast after taking two years to recover from a hidden explosive in 2007. Leicht wrote letters from his hospital bed begging to be put back on the front lines and died less than a month into that second tour. His first tour was cut short when a bomb tore through his Humvee knocking him unconscious just three weeks in.
