U.S. Envoy: Gaddafi Forces Taking Viagra, Raping

During a closed-door Security Council meeting on Thursday, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice mentioned use of Viagra during a discussion about reports that Gaddafi's troops are engaging in sexual violence. Several U.N. diplomats at the meeting told Reuters that no one in the meeting responded when Rice mentioned the male performance-enhancing drug, but they said that if the charge was true, it could mean Gaddafi troops were being encouraged by authorities to rape and pillage rebel strongholds. But several diplomats said Rice gave no evidence of her claim, which was more an attempt to argue that the situation in Libya is worse than a standard war. "She spoke of Gaddafi's soldiers targeting children, and other atrocities," one diplomat said. Diplomats also said that her comment was directed at countries such as India, Russia, and China, which have become skeptical of the effectiveness of NATO'S intervention.
