U.S. Demands Democracy in Thailand

While at an Asian security conference in Singapore on Saturday, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel demanded that coup leaders in Thailand immediately hold general elections, release detainees, and end curbs on free expression that include tight media control and the current ban on political gatherings of more than five people. Hagel also said that the U.S. has suspended its military ties with the country. Late on Friday, Thai military leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha said that civilian rule is probably at least a year away.
