Unemployment Claims Keep Rising

The stock market may be having more good days, but American workers aren't. The Labor Department reported this morning that new jobless claims jumped by 669,000, more than analysts expected, and 5.73 million people are now getting benefits—a record for the 10th week in a row. "As a proportion of the work force, the number of people on the jobless benefit rolls is the highest since May 1983," according to the Associated Press. The national unemployment rate increased last month to 8.5 percent from 8.1 percent.
