North Carolina’s success cannot be credited to its mixture of top talent and elite coaching alone. The Heels also poses the winning color combination—light blue and white. Since 1960, more national champions have worn light blue than any other color. The soft, sky-blue shade evokes John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty as well as Michael Jordan’s championship origins with UNC. Thus begs the question: was Michigan State doomed from the start? Considering only 4% of champions have worn green, one can only wonder what a wardrobe change would have done for the over-matched Spartans.
