Ukraine to Give Up Uranium Stockpile

An early breakthrough for President Obama’s nuclear summit: Ukraine has agreed to give up its entire stockpile of highly enriched uranium, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced on Monday. “Ukraine will also convert its nuclear reactors that use HEU to ones that will use low-enriched uranium,” says Jake Tapper. After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine had the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world. It returned its weapons to Russia but continued to sit on fissile material.
