Ukraine Signs Deal That Started Crisis

The very same trade deal that former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych turned down, sparking violent street battles and his ouster, has been signed by his successor. The deal sets up a free-trade zone for Ukraine as well as for fellow signees Moldova and Georgia. In return, the countries will commit to modeling themselves on EU democracies and improve their human-rights performances. President Petro Poroshenko called it the second-most important moment in Ukraine’s history, after its independence from Russia. “The document we will sign today is not just political and economic, it is a symbol of faith and unbreakable will,” he said.
