Uber Suspends Low-Cost Service in France

UberPOP, the low-cost ride-sharing program which connects riders with non-professional drivers, has been suspended in France, Uber announced on Friday. The decision follows increased scrutiny from French regulators and taxi unions after recent legislature began to require all chauffeurs to hold a costly professional license, a mandate not required by UberPPOP drivers. French authorities have called for the entire Uber operations to be banned while taxi unions have staged nationwide strikes to protest the service. Uber is suspending the UberPOP service as a safety measure for its drivers.
