Two BART Workers Killed

A train struck and killed two BART union workers who were performing routine maintenance on Saturday, the third day of a strike by BART employees. A BART spokesman said that while the workers were on strike and trains were shut down, some trains were moving between stations for maintenance and security reasons. A conductor was at the helm of the train, but the train was being run on automatic controls at the moment of impact. One of those killed was a BART employee (and a member of the striking union) and the other was a contractor, a spokesman said. The National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday night that it would be taking over the investigation.
