Turkey Ending Campus Headscarf Ban

One victory in the battle between Islamic and secular forces in Turkey has been won as the state's education board is now allowing Islamic headscarves on campus, a ruling which reverses a 13-year ban on the practice. Observers say the change is yet another sign of shifting power in a Muslim country with a long secular traditions. One instructor at Istanbul University who kicked a hat-wearing student out of class said he is the subject of death threats. Turkey's public sector still bans the wearing of headscarves for workers who hold government jobs.
