President Trump says he will soon sign an executive order requiring universities in the United States to maintain “free speech” on campuses. Trump also threatened that if schools did not comply they could lose federal research funds. Freedom of speech is enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump made the remarks during his speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. During his remarks, the president brought on stage after Hayden Williams, a conservative activist who was punched at the University of California, Berkeley, last month while recruiting students for a conservative group. If universities do not comply with the order “it will be very costly,” Trump said. The federal government awards universities more than $30 billion annually in research funds.
