President Trump has confirmed that there will be military tanks at the Washington, D.C., Fourth of July celebration. Trump reportedly shared the news to pool reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, confirming his hopes to have tanks or other armored military vehicles on display. “And we’re gonna have some tanks stationed outside,” Trump reportedly said. “So we have to put them in certain areas but we have the brand new Sherman tanks and we have the brand new Abram tanks.” The tanks reportedly weigh 60 tons or more and can be damaging to streets.
In addition to his position as leader of the free world, Trump has taken on a new role ahead of America’s birthday: event planner. The president has become particularly interested in planning this year’s celebration on the National Mall, with several senior administration officials describing his level of interest as unusual, The Washington Post reports. Trump has apparently been hoping for a military-heavy parade since he attended France’s Bastille Day celebration in 2017. Various officials, including members of the Pentagon, have cautioned Trump against using the tanks unnecessarily as they can damage local infrastructure: “Tanks, but no tanks,” the D.C. Council said on Twitter.
