Trump Administration Announces Return of All Iran Sanctions

The Trump administration on Friday announced its plan to reimpose all U.S. sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. The sanctions will go into place Monday. In a call with reporters, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin said the administration had granted eight countries temporary waivers to continue importing Iranian oil. Pompeo said as part of the deal, the countries, which have not been disclosed, would significantly reduce their imports from Tehran. Mnuchin and Pompeo said the administration would keep track of any effort by Iran to circumvent sanctions. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and China have remained party to the 2015 deal and have said they would set up new payment systems to continue doing business with Iran.
