Tribal Rifts Hurt Libya Uprising

The Libyan uprising against Muammar Gaddafi is being undermined as tribal factionalism and fighting increase. Many acts of revenge against tribes formerly loyal to Gaddafi have called the rebels’ unity into question. There is a chance that the infighting may damage support from members of the NATO alliance, which is facing a September deadline to renew its air campaign. The United States recently recognized the rebels’ Transitional National Council as the legitimate government. But one Obama administration official said, “I think the jury is still out on how unified the command will be.”
