Top Dem Sets Budget Ultimatum

This could mean trouble: A top Senate Democrat said Sunday that he wouldn’t stand for any budget cuts in discretionary spending over $10.5 billion. Illinois’ Dick Durbin, the Democrats’ assistant Senate leader, said anything more than that would “push more kids out of school... It stops investment of infrastructure, which kills good-paying jobs.” His line in the sand is a far cry from what the GOP-led House is pushing for—they’ve passed a package that would slash $61 billion from next year’s budget. The Senate will vote on that bill this week; it’s not expected to pass.
