Tom Petty died Monday evening after conflicting news reports about his condition left fans in a frenzy throughout much of the day. The rock legend was rushed from his Malibu home to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital on Sunday night, where he was placed on life support before it was eventually pulled. After a news report announcing the singer’s death prematurely triggered an outpouring of condolences Monday afternoon, the family later confirmed that Petty passed away on Monday evening. “He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends,” a statement released by spokeswoman Carla Sacks said. Petty, 66, had just finished a tour with his band, The Heartbreakers, just the previous week.
