Will artists pay for the billboard space too? A Dutch design student and his small cadre of allies, each with a particular specialty (finance, journalism, art criticism, etc.), are leading the effort to replace the massive ads that typify New York City’s Times Square with art. Dubbed Times Square to Art Square (TS2AS), the campaign has thus far raised about $2,500 of the $10,000 Justus Bruns, the founder, says will be necessary to spread the word about the project. The group hopes to switch out ads with art in Times Square by fall 2012.
