Taiwan Elects First Female President

Taiwan has voted in opposition candidate Tsai Ing-wen as its first female president. Tsai, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, unseated the Nationalist Party which has ruled Taiwan for almost a decade. Tsai’s party is known for its desire for Taiwan’s independence from China; however, in her victory speech Tsai said that she had no plans to upset the status quo with regards to relations with China.
