Swiss Vote to Keep Out Immigrants

The Swiss, apparently, would rather people didn't permanently partake in their chocolate, cheese, and watches. Against all expectations as well as the federal parliament's wishes, the country narrowly voted (in a 50.3 percent majority) to impose a cap on its number of foreign immigrants. The referendum on “mass migration” was proposed by a right-wing group. Now, Switzerland will have to put at least some limits on immigrants, including those from European Union countries, which could strain its continental standing. Pascal Sciarini, a Swiss political scientist, said the country faces economic “chaos” because now all of its diplomatic and trade agreements within the EU will have to be renegotiated.
