Suu Kyi Makes First Political Trip

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi tested the limits of her freedom Sunday as she made her first political trip outside the city of Rangoon since being released from house arrest in November. The government, dominated by the military junta that had put the Nobel laureate in jail or house arrest for much of her adult life, had warned that the trip could trigger riots, but it took place peacefully, and Suu Kyi returned home without incident. The last time Suu Kyi traveled out of Rangoon, her entourage was ambushed, and she was sentenced to seven years of house arrest.
