Study: Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Obesity, Diabetes

A new study indicates that artificial sweeteners are linked to obesity and diabetes, asserting they contain chemicals that change how the body processes fat and uses energy. USA Today reports the study from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University found that artificial sweeteners increased the amount of biochemicals, fats, and amino acids found in rats’ blood. Lead researcher Brian Hoffmann said “replacing these sugars with non-caloric artificial sweeteners leads to negative changes in fat and energy metabolism.” Previous studies have found links between sweeteners and dementia and stroke.
