Stocks Finish Up in 2016

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 13 percent in 2016, while its counterparts the Nasdaq and S&P 500 finished up by 7.5 percent and 9 percent respectively. The 13 percent gain for the Dow was its largest since 2013, although losses in recent days have prevented it from eclipsing 20,000. It finished at 19,762.6 on Friday, the last day of trading for the calendar year, and has gained eight percent since Election Day. The year-to-date rebound is especially impressive after the market had its worst January finish since 2009. Investors say further gains in 2017 will depend on whether President-elect Donald Trump delivers on his policy promises.
