Talk about a putting your money where your mouth is. South Korea has long had a reputation for emphasizing education, and now it’s been reported that one of its top-ranked math teachers, Cha Kil Yong, made $8 million last year. Cha prepares students for the college entrance exam in mathematics at an online “hagwon,” or cram school. As a result of South Korea’s emphasis on education, the country is consistently placed high on worldwide rankings for reading, math, and science. But its ranking for student happiness is the worst and has one of the highest suicide rates in the developed world.
