Six Racehorses Burn to Death

Six racehorses died after a passing driver flicked a cigarette into their trailer, causing the hay around them to catch fire. They were being driven to their first start of the season at the Belmont Park racetrack in Long Island, New York; the trip had begun in Florida. The drivers of the tractor-trailer pulled over after discovering smoke and seeing the horses in distress on a TV screen on the driver’s dashboard. One of the drivers sustained burns while trying to pull them out, but they were unable to save any of the horses. Barry Schwartz, a co-founder of the Calvin Klein fashion empire, owned one of the horses. So far, there are no leads as to the identity of the driver who flicked the cigarette.
