Shots were fired at a vehicle carrying a U.S. embassy official in Guatemala on Sunday evening after the envoy accidentally got caught up in vigilante violence in the southern city of San Vicente Pacaya. There were no injuries but an embassy official confirmed to Reuters that the incident was being investigated by police. “It seems the incident did not have a political motivation, nor was it directed at the embassy,” said an embassy spokesperson. Police said the shots were were fired by a group of residents who were pursuing those responsible for an unspecified crime as the vehicle was passing through the area. Cops added that they helped the diplomat return home after the incident.
