    Sherpas Quit Mount Everest

    Navesh Chitrakar/Reuters

The Mount Everest Sherpas announced Tuesday that they will abandon the climbing season to memorialize their 16 brethren killed in last week’s avalanche. "We had a long meeting this afternoon and we decided to stop our climbing this year to honor our fallen brothers,” said Sherpa Tulsi Gurung. Others say the Sherpas’ refusal comes out of their anger with the Nepalese government for refusing to offer better compensation to victims’ families. At the same time, foreigners who have spent tens of thousands of dollars to climb Everest are now left in the lurch.
