SCOTUS Declines to Hear ‘Making a Murderer’ Appeal

The Supreme Court announced Monday that it would not hear the appeal case brought by Brendan Dassey, who was featured in the popular Netflix series Making a Murderer and is serving life in prison. The Washington Post reports Dassey, who is now in his late twenties, was appealing his conviction in the 2007 rape and murder of Teresa Halbach on the grounds that investigators used illegitimately coercive tactics to force him to confess over a 48-hour period, in which he did not have a lawyer present. Those who interrogated him claim that Dassey knew his rights and confessed in response to non-coercive, open-ended questions. The court declined to say why it will not hear Dassey’s case, in accordance with its typical procedure.
