Santorum Speaks to Super-PAC Donors

After denying reports that he would, Rick Santorum excused himself Thursday from the campaign trail to press the flesh with around 25 donors to an allied super PAC. The former Pennsylvania senator reportedly spent about a half hour chatting up the supporters of the Red, White and Blue Fund, which has so far amassed about $5.5 million in expenditures aiding Santorum’s nomination bid, including $1.7 million poured into ads in Michigan to prepare the ground for the state’s primary this Tuesday. Super PACs are prohibited under Federal Election Commission regulations from coordinating with the campaigns they support; the FEC did decide in June, however, that candidates could speak at events sponsored by their super PACs if they do not ask donors for donations that exceed the federal limits set for other PACs.
