Same Sex Wedding Lotto in NYC

New York City is getting more like a reality show every day. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has instituted a cap of 764 on the number of couples who can get married on Sunday, July 24—the first day gay marriage will be legal in the state. To deal with the overload of people who want to get married that day, the mayor’s office will hold a lottery Friday, July 22, for gay and straight couples who have applied to get married on Sunday. The city clerk’s office said they have already received 2,661 applications for licenses to marry on July 24, and they estimated about 1,700 of those are from gay couples. All five boroughs of the city will open their doors on Sunday for lottery-winning couples, both gay and straight, so gay couples can wed the day it become legal.
