North Carolina’s GOP Chairman Robin Hayes has been indicted on federal bribery and fraud charges, according to court documents. Hayes is accused of conspiracy of wire fraud, bribery, and giving false statements. Three other men—Greg Lindberg, John Palermo, and John Gray—have also been indicted. Lindberg has been a big donor to the state’s Republican and Democratic parties in recent election cycles. “The indictment unsealed today outlines a brazen bribery scheme in which Greg Lindberg and his coconspirators allegedly offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions in exchange for official action that would benefit Lindberg’s business interests,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. The indictment alleges that the four men used independent expenditure accounts and improper campaign contributions in order to get the commissioner to act in favor of Lindberg’s company. FBI agents reportedly interviewed Hayes about his involvement with alleged improper campaign contributions in Aug. 2018, and he denied any involvement.
