Report: Top ISIS Commander Dead in Mosul

A senior ISIS commander was reportedly killed in the battle for control of the Iraqi city of Mosul, government military sources have told CNN. Mahmoud Shukri al-Nuaimi was allegedly killed Tuesday in an Iraqi-led airstrike in a western part of the city. His death was confirmed by ISIS in a video that described him as “the martyr of the battle.” According to Iraqi intelligence, Nuaimi was formerly a high-ranking officer in Saddam Hussein’s intelligence team, but CNN could not verify that detail independently. Also this week, Islamic State militants reportedly stockpiled sulfur and ammonia in civilian areas, and executed at least 100 civilians. UN human-rights groups reported that public executions were carried out for the purpose of dissuading others from committing “treason and collaboration” with Iraqi forces.
