Report: NSA Bugging Merkel Circle

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag is reporting that the National Security Agency has stepped up its spying on Angela Merkel's senior officials and confidants in the wake of President Obama's order to halt surveilance of the German chancellor. The report quoted an NSA official who said "We have had the order not to miss out on any information now that we are no longer able to monitor the chancellor's communication directly.” Included on the NSA's alleged German spylist is Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, who is very close with Merkel. Germans were shocked last year when it was revealed the U.S. has monitored the chancellor's mobile phone. Germany has been pushing for a “no-spy” deal with the U.S., but the latter has not agreed to do it.
