Rep. Nancy Pelosi Nominated for Speaker by House Democrats

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was nominated for speaker of the House by Democrats Wednesday after she ran unopposed in a secret-ballot vote, NBC News reports. Despite speculations that a serious effort was underway to reclaim the top position from Pelosi, she won a simple majority, paving the way for her to be voted in as speaker when the full House conducts a formal vote in January. “As I say, our diversity is our strength but our unity is our power. We will use that power again in a unifying way for our country,” Pelosi told reporters Wednesday. After serious contenders emerged to replace Pelosi, such as Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH), the network reports that Pelosi lobbied each of the factions who expressed concerns against her. Individuals from each group “came out publicly in support” of her soon after. Pelosi previously served as the first female speaker from 2007 to 2011.
