That's more tweets per second than were sent after the news of Osama bin Laden's death, and slightly fewer than during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The first tweet was sent by user @JordnJnkieJuice, who tweeted “EARTHQUAKE!!!!” 24 seconds after the shaking began.
