Qatar Diplomat Just Wanted A Smoke

Cancel the red alert: The new "shoe bomb" plane incident was anything but. A plane flying from Washington to Denver Wednesday was escorted into the airport by F-16s after Mohammed Al Madadi, a Qatari diplomat, evidently had a cigarette in the lavatory. When flight attendants smelled smoke and asked him what he'd been doing, he allegedly replied "Lighting my shoes on fire." Two air marshals sat next to him for the rest of the flight, then questioned and searched passengers according to procedure to determine if there was an "accomplice" among them. Smoking on a plane flight is a felony, but Al Madadi may have diplomatic immunity.
