Putin to France: Let’s Overcome ‘Mutual Mistrust’

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday congratulated newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron and noted the “mutual mistrust” between the two countries. Putin asked that the two nations “overcome” this hurdle and wished Macron “strong health” in his new job. “The citizens of France have entrusted you the leadership of the country at a difficult time for Europe and for the entire international community,” read a statement released by the Kremlin. Putin noted the growing threat of terrorism in Europe, adding that it is now “particularly important to overcome mutual distrust and unite efforts to ensure international stability and security.” For months, Macron and French officials battled malicious hackers and a vicious social-media campaign believed to be supported by Moscow in an attempt to tip the election to far-right rival Marine Le Pen.
