Pro-Government Assembly in Venezuela Takes Congress’ Powers

Venezuela’s pro-government constitutional assembly unanimously passed a decree Friday taking over legislative powers from the opposition-led congress, the AP reported. The assembly—first instituted by President Nicolás Maduro in an effort to consolidate his power—gave itself the ability to pass legislation on a range of issues regarding the country’s security and sovereignty. The move comes after congressional leaders refused to swear an oath of loyalty to the assembly, which the opposition considers illegitimate.
