DELAYED JUSTICE

Prep School Grad Owen Labrie Begins Stint in Jail for Sexual Assault

Owen Labrie, the former student at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire who was convicted of misdemeanor statutory rape in 2015, reported to jail on Wednesday to serve his remaining 10-month sentence. Labrie was accused of sexually assaulting his 15-year-old classmate, Cheesy Prout, in 2014 as part of the school’s unofficial “Senior Salute,” a tradition in which upperclassmen allegedly attempt to hook up with younger students before graduating. Prout’s father, Alex, said Labrie is finally paying for the crimes he committed. “Today, the perpetrator who sexually assaulted our then 15-year-old daughter will finally be held accountable for his crime,” Prout said in a statement. “He has shown no remorse... we hope he never sexually assaults another person in the future.”

Labrie, who is now 23, reported to jail Wednesday morning, more than a week after a judge denied an appeal to shorten his sentence. He was acquitted of raping Prout, but a jury found him guilty of misdemeanor sexual-assault charges and endangering the welfare of a child. Labrie was also convicted of using a computer to lure an underage student for sex, requiring him to register as a sex offender.
