Pope Met with Fidel Castro

Pope Francis reportedly met with Fidel Castro on Sunday for an informal conversation after mass. The Pope touched down in Cuba on Saturday, beginning his tour through the island nation before heading to the U.S. While there, the pontiff met with President Raul Castro, brother of Fidel and praised the thawed relationship between Cuba and the U.S. He called it “an example of reconciliation for the entire world” that “fills us with hope.” The president thanked Pope Francis for his work on ending a diplomatic standoff between the U.S. and Cuba. He also took the opportunity to rail against the U.S. trade embargo and the naval base at Guantanamo.
