Polygamous leader Lyle Jeffs has escaped from house arrest in Utah ahead of his trial on food-stamp fraud. Jeffs, a 56-year-old leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was released from prison this month and was instructed to remain at his home in Salt Lake City and wear a GPS monitor. “Blame the judge for this,” said Wallace Jeffs, one of Lyle’s half-brothers who did not want him to be released in the first place. “Everybody knew that he was going to do this. Everybody.” He also predicted that Lyle is likely fleeing to Mexico or South America.
