Poles Continue to Mourn Loss

Poles continued to mourn the victims of the plane crash that ended in the death of many of their country’s top politicians well after midnight. The crash occurred as Polish officials made their way to commemorate another tragedy, Katyn: an event 70 years ago when, under Stalin’s orders, thousands of Polish army officers were massacred in the Katyn Forest. ”Katyn was already our nation’s trauma,” said a Polish priest. “Now it has reinforced itself on us again.” Flowers and memorabilia decorated many of Poland’s governmental buildings and public spaces and, on Sunday, special church services were held across the strongly Roman Catholic nation.
