A plane chartered by coalition forces in Afghanistan landed unexpectedly in Iran on Friday after Iranian officials questioned its flight plan. The State Department said in a statement that the plane was "re-routed...because of a bureaucratic issue" and not "forced" down by Iranian jets, as The Washington Post originally reported. The plane departed from Bagram air base and was en route to Dubai, carrying about 100 Americans. The plane was instructed by Iranian air traffic controllers to return to Afghanistan and file the correct plan. Without enough fuel to return to Afghanistan, it landed in Iran instead. Another Flu Dubai plane was sent to the airport, where all passengers re-boarded and took off around 6 p.m. ET, about three hours after it was diverted.
