Philippines’ Duterte: Police Can Kill ‘Idiots’ Who Resist Arrest

President Rodrigo Duterte told Philippine police Monday that they were free to kill any “idiots” who violently resist arrest in his controversial war against drugs. Duterte, who assumed his post in June of last year, has ordered the extrajudicial killings of thousands of people in the country. “Your duty requires you to overcome the resistance of the person you are arresting ... (if) he resists, and it is a violent one... you are free to kill the idiots, that is my order to you,” said Duterte, breaking off from a prepared speech at a cemetery. He directed the order to Jovie Espenido, a police chief of a small town where the mayor was killed in an anti-drug raid.
