Pharrell, Thicke to Pay Gayes $7.3M

A jury has ordered Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke to pay $7.3 million to the family of Marvin Gaye for copyright infringement. The verdict found that the pair’s 2013 hit “Blurred Lines” copied the sound of Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up.” Williams contended in court that the two songs share “feel—not infringement,” though he admitted when listening to the juxtaposed bass lines that “It sounds like you’re playing the same thing.” “Blurred Lines” has grossed almost $16.5 million since its release.
