Peace Corps Applications Spike 32%

The Peace Corps is set to announce Wednesday it’s received the highest number of applications in four decades. Applications to join the international service organization jumped 32 percent compared to last fiscal year, with the 23,000 applications received marking the largest number since 1975. Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet is expected to make the announcement at the University of Michigan—the place where then-U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy challenged students to give two years of their lives to serve the developing world in 1960. The future president’s call led to the creation of the Peace Corps.
