Paul Caneiro Pleads Not Guilty to Slaying Brother and His Family

The New Jersey man accused of killing his brother, his sister-in-law, and their two young children pleaded not guilty Friday. At Monmouth County Superior Court, Paul Caneiro, 52, wore a green jail jumpsuit and handcuffs and was silent as his lawyer entered his pleas to counts relating to the deaths of his brother, Kevin Caneiro, 50, Jennifer Caneiro, 45, and their two children, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia. Caneiro also pleaded not guilty to two counts of arson and two counts of weapons charges. “Your honor, my client has indicated that he wishes to consent and waive his right to have a detention hearing,” his lawyer, Robert Honecker, told Judge James McGann as Caneiro sat in the jury box. Authorities allege that after Caneiro killed the family, he set fire to their house and then to his own home to destroy evidence as part of an “elaborate ruse.” Caneiro is due back in court on January 3rd for another hearing.
